4 Water Heater Maintenance Tips from Our Red Oak Plumber

Posted on: December 31, 2015

Furnaces, HVAC systems and water heaters are some of the most important appliances in our Red Oak homes and most days, we don’t even think about them. And that’s how it should be. They should be humming along, quietly in the background.

However, once a year, give your water heater a little time and attention. It can make a lot of difference over the lifetime of one of your home’s hardest working appliances.

1. Flush it Out

Sediment and debris accumulates over time inside your water heater tank. Periodic tank cleanings will help your water heater work more efficiently. Running more efficiently means lower your energy costs and helps reduce the amount of noise your water heater makes.

2.  Give it Some Space

Not only is it a fire hazard to crowd your water heater, it can also lower your unit’s efficiency. Gas heaters need oxygen to function. Blocking the tank limits the flow of oxygen to the combustion chamber forcing it to work harder using more energy to heat up the water in the tank. The extra strain can damage the pilot light and other heating elements.

3. Give it a Check Up

Check pipes, valves, the gas line and pilot light for corrosion, black residue or burn marks. Look for damp spots on the floor or other signs of water leaks. If you see any kind of damage or suspect something is off call in a specialist, like those at Dial One Johnson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning. Each plumber on our team is highly trained and can assess your water heater for hidden problems.

4. Turn Down the Heat

It’s best to set the temperature of hot water heater between 115 to 120 degrees. A 10-degree difference can mean energy savings for you. In some instances, up to 5 percent! If you’re going away for three days or more turn the thermostat down to its lowest setting for even more energy savings.

5. BONUS TIP!

Well… it’s not really a bonus tip, more like a suggestion. Just because water heater maintenance is a good idea doesn’t mean you have to be the one to do it. Hire a plumber! But don’t bring in any Red Oak plumber. Call a local, licensed professional such as Dial One Johnson Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning and let us can take care of the dirty work.
