Materials for Cleaning Air Vents

Before you start cleaning, be sure to collect all of the necessary materials. Here are the materials you’ll need to clean your vents:

These materials will ensure that you can easily clean the vents.

Steps to Clean Your Air Conditioner Vents

We’ve broken this task up into small steps to make it easy to follow along. Here are nine steps to properly clean your air conditioner vents:

1. Turn Off HVAC System

Safety is always important to consider when cleaning your vents. The first thing that you should do is turn off your HVAC system. You may also want to wear eye coverings and a mask. This will keep you from getting dust in your eyes or from inhaling particulates.

2. Remove Vent Covers and Filters

Remove the covers and filters to all of the vents, supply and return registers. Some of the covers will require a screwdriver for removal. You will later clean them and replace the filters.

3. Clean Supply Registers

Take your long handled brush or broom and loosen up any dirt and dust inside of the vents. Then, take your vacuum cleaner and use the hose attachment to suck up all of the dirt, dust and debris. To make sure that you have completely removed everything, take the broom and sweep out the dirt. Be sure to sweep it into a trash can or to lay a sheet underneath to catch any of the dust.

4. Clean Return Air Vents

Complete the same steps that you did for the supply register. Loosen up dust and debris and use the vacuum cleaner to clean and sweep out any remaining dust.

5. Clean Vent Covers

To clean your vent covers, fill up a small bucket with water and soap. Put the covers in the bucket and scrub them clean. You can also use a wipe to clean up the vent covers. Be sure to clean in between the grates. These can quickly accumulate dust throughout the months. Once cleaned, you can place them aside until you finish cleaning out the vents.

6. Wipe Down Vents

Use your cloth to wipe down the sides of the vents and remove any extra dust or mold. While you won’t be able to reach too far inside of the vents, anything that you can reach will help.

7. Replace Filters

This is one of the most important parts of cleaning your vents. Your air filters play an integral role in improving your indoor air quality. When your filters become clogged they can damage your unit. For example, evaporator coils often freeze when airflow is blocked. In addition to avoiding damage to your unit, there are a variety of benefits to replacing your filter on a regular basis:

You can purchase filters at any home improvement store and even some grocery stores. There are a variety to choose from, each with its own replacement requirements. Replacing your filters keeps you healthy and comfortable.

8. Reinstall Vent Covers

Once you have cleaned all of the vents around your home, reinstall the vent covers with your screwdriver. As you reinstall each, check the openings for anything you missed. You can also shine your flashlight into the duct to see if there’s anything especially concerning that you may need to call an AC repair company for.
